Plymouth expands maritime defence and autonomy capabilities

Plymouth is set to become a significant hub for maritime defence and autonomy following major investments in the region. Teledyne Marine has announced plans to open a new Vehicles Support Centre in Plymouth by October 2026. The facility will provide maintenance, technical assistance, and rapid deployment services for autonomous ocean sensing technologies, including Gavia AUVs and Slocum gliders, supporting the Royal Navy and commercial customers.

Additionally, Defence Minister Lord Vernon Coaker has approved a strategic business case for Team Plymouth, a partnership involving the Ministry of Defence, Babcock International Group, and the University of Plymouth. This approval unlocks £50 million from the Government’s Defence Growth Deal, which could potentially trigger an additional £34 million from industry and local partners. The total investment aims to create nearly 1,000 jobs and fund university-led initiatives focused on marine autonomy and skills development.
