Plzeň completes first phase of Republic Square reconstruction

The first phase of the reconstruction of Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky) in Plzeň is nearing completion. The project, costing 60.5 million CZK, includes the planting of 14 elms, the installation of new lighting, and the addition of misting systems and drinking fountains to improve comfort during heatwaves.

A major change involves converting the western side of the square into a pedestrian zone. Starting in September, vehicle access will be restricted to service, supply, and hotel guests only. City officials, including Deputy Mayor Aleš Tolar and Technical Deputy Mayor Pavel Bosák, state the goal is to transform the area from a traffic roundabout and parking lot into a vibrant space for cafes and shops.

The project has faced criticism from the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ). Representatives, including Petr Sokol, expressed concerns regarding the loss of traditional granite paving and argued that the new trees might obstruct views of the St. Bartholomew Cathedral and the plague column. City officials maintain the changes respond to public demand, noting that a survey of 12,000 respondents showed 97 percent support for planting trees.
