Plzeňský Prazdroj launches new malt‑soaking plant with giant stainless‑steel vessels, cutting water use
Plzeňský Prazdroj is constructing a new malt‑soaking (máčírna) facility next to its malt house in Plzeň, investing nearly 0.25 billion CZK. Eight massive stainless‑steel vessels, each 5.7 m in diameter and over 4 m high, were delivered from Olomouc by the Czech family firm Project Malt. The vessels, each holding about 63 t of dry barley, will raise the plant’s capacity by roughly 15 percent.
The new equipment, including a modern grain‑washing system, is expected to save about 500 L of water per tonne of barley, amounting to an estimated 44 000 m³ of water annually – enough to fill more than 17 Olympic‑size swimming pools. Spokesperson Zdeněk Kovář said the investment will boost capacity and significantly reduce water consumption, while malt house head Michal Šneberger highlighted the environmental benefits. Installation of the vessels begins in October, with full delivery expected by September. Police escorted the night transport to ensure safe passage.
