PM Jan Dhan Yojana completes 12 years with 59 crore accounts

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has completed 12 years since its launch on August 28, 2014. According to the Ministry of Finance, the initiative has expanded to include over 59 crore bank accounts, with total deposits reaching ₹3.17 lakh crore.

The scheme has significantly impacted marginalized populations, with 78 per cent of accounts opened in rural or semi-urban areas. Women represent a major portion of the beneficiaries, accounting for approximately 56 per cent of all accounts. The average deposit per account has grown to ₹5,356, reflecting a 3.4-fold increase over the last 12 years.

Key features of the program include no minimum balance requirements, free RuPay debit cards with ₹2 lakh accident insurance coverage, and an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000. India’s financial inclusion index also saw an increase from 53.9 in 2018 to 67 in 2026.
