India celebrates Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti

Indian leaders and religious communities are observing Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the sage credited with composing the epic Ramayana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the timeless teachings of the sage, noting that the Ramayana continues to offer insights into service, compassion, and social harmony. He specifically cited the character of Bhagwan Ram as an embodiment of inclusiveness, referencing his interactions with Mata Shabari and Nishadraj.

Other prominent figures, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, also paid tribute to the 'Adikavi' (first poet), emphasizing his contribution to Indian culture and the eternal values of Sanatan culture.

The day is observed on the full moon day of the Ashwin month. For the Balmiki community, the occasion is particularly sacred, with some districts declaring public or bank holidays. The sage's life story, transitioning from a highway robber named Ratnakar to a revered poet through spiritual penance, remains a central element of the celebrations.
