India fintech sector expands global footprint via UPI and AI

At the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and financial leaders highlighted India's rapid digital transformation. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as a cornerstone of this evolution, noting its expansion to 11 countries and its role in driving economic resilience. He expressed ambitions to further connect UPI with international payment systems, citing the India-Singapore linkage as a successful model.

Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra noted that fintech has fundamentally changed financial access, moving services 'from the branch to the hand of every citizen' and improving credit delivery for small businesses. NPCI officials identified rural expansion and offline payment solutions as the next major growth frontiers for UPI, while also noting the increasing use of artificial intelligence for fraud detection and personalized services.

Amid global economic volatility, India reported a robust 7.8 percent GDP growth for the April-June quarter. This economic strength was further underscored by a sovereign rating upgrade to the 'A' category by a Japanese credit rating agency, signaling increased international confidence in India's macroeconomic stability.
