Ladakh receives Rs 3,350-crore boost via five new development projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated five major development projects in Ladakh worth approximately Rs 3,350 crore. These initiatives aim to strengthen connectivity, energy infrastructure, water security, and cultural heritage preservation in the region.

A key highlight is the new passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh. Built at a cost of roughly Rs 640 crore, the 23,800-square-meter facility is designed to increase annual passenger capacity from 10 lakh to 35 lakh. The terminal utilizes geothermal and solar energy to reduce its carbon footprint in the ecologically sensitive area.

In terms of connectivity, the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), has been dedicated to the nation. This strategic route through the Zanskar Valley reduces travel time from 12 hours to approximately 3 hours, providing an alternative to the Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highways and enhancing logistical support for the armed forces.

Energy and water security projects include the 9 MW Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project, the 66 kV Dah-Hanu-Khaltsi transmission line, and the development of 40 water bodies across 40 villages under Project Amrit Him Sarovar. Additionally, India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park has been established at Sindhu Ghat in Leh to protect ancient archaeological heritage.
