India expands semiconductor ecosystem with major project approvals and SEMICON India 2026
India is significantly expanding its semiconductor ecosystem through major project approvals and upcoming industry events. The central government has approved 12 semiconductor projects across six states, involving investment commitments exceeding Rs 1.64 lakh crore. This includes the approval of Semicon 2.0, which features an outlay of Rs 1,27,500 crore focusing on areas such as chip design, fabrication, and advanced packaging.
In Odisha, SiCSem Private Limited has received approval to establish a Rs 3,406.25 crore silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor manufacturing facility in the Khordha district. The plant, spanning over 21 acres, aims to produce 4.8 million SiC diodes and 91.2 million SiC MOSFETs annually, targeting sectors like electric vehicles and renewable energy. The project is supported by both central and state government subsidies.
To showcase these advancements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi on September 17. The three-day event, themed ‘Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem’, will host over 600 exhibitors, including 300 international companies, and more than 150 speakers to discuss industry policy and international partnerships.
