PMII students protest fuel and utility shortages in South Sulawesi

Students from the Pergerakan Mahasiswa Islam Indonesia (PMII) in Maros and Pangkep, South Sulawesi, have launched protests demanding government evaluation of basic service distributions. The demonstrations address widespread shortages of subsidized fuel (BBM), 3kg LPG gas, and recurring electricity outages.

In Maros, PMII leaders highlighted a severe water crisis that affected approximately 92,000 people across seven districts in July 2026. While the local government has provided water via tankers, activists are calling for permanent infrastructure solutions rather than temporary emergency aid.

In Pangkep, protesters blocked the Trans Sulawesi highway and burned tires to protest energy instability. The group issued nine demands, including calls for PT PLN (Persero) to halt rolling blackouts and provide compensation for damaged electronics. They also urged law enforcement to investigate potential corruption or organized crime within the energy distribution networks.
