PMK party to remain neutral in Tamil Nadu by-elections

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) party has announced it will neither contest nor support any political party in the upcoming by-elections for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu. PMK President Dr. Ambumani Ramadass stated the decision followed consultations with state and district officials.

The by-elections, scheduled for October 6 with results on October 9, follow the resignations of AIADMK MLAs Margatham Kumaravel and Satyabama, who subsequently joined the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The PMK's decision to remain neutral is viewed as a significant shift in regional political dynamics, particularly as it signals potential friction within its current alliance with the AIADMK. Reports suggest the PMK was dissatisfied with the AIADMK leadership for selecting candidates without consulting allies.

The move has turned the by-elections into a multi-cornered contest, with parties such as the DMK, AIADMK, BJP, CPI, and CPI(M) also participating. The PMK's neutrality may impact electoral equations in these reserved seats, especially in Madurantakam where the party maintains a strong voter base.
