PMV Minera facilities partially closed following diesel spill in Jáltipan

Mexican environmental authorities have ordered a partial and temporary closure of PMV Minera facilities in Jáltipan following a diesel spill that contaminated the Chacalapa stream. The spill originated from a brine extraction well at the company’s salt plant.

Investigations revealed that rainfall caused the diesel to wash out of the extraction well, traveling approximately 350 meters to an intermittent water body before advancing roughly 2.5 kilometers into the Chacalapa stream. Authorities have deployed oleophilic barriers and cords to contain the substance, and the company is currently working to recover the spilled fuel.

Profepa has mandated urgent corrective measures, including the immediate plugging and repair of the well, as well as the submission of an environmental remediation program for evaluation. While the spill occurred near Petroquímica Mexicana de Vinilo (PMV Minera) lands, inspections confirmed that no leaks or spills originated from Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) infrastructure. Because the incident did not stem from hydrocarbon sector activities, the Agency for Safety, Energy and Environment (ASEA) stated the matter falls outside its direct regulatory jurisdiction, though it will continue to coordinate with Profepa.
