Pneumo 20 vaccine becomes available for elderly in Brazilian municipalities

Municipal health departments in João Monlevade and Poços de Caldas have made the Pneumo 20 vaccine available to elderly residents aged 85 and older. The vaccine protects against 20 types of Streptococcus pneumoniae, which can cause serious conditions such as pneumonia, meningitis, otitis, and sinusitis.

Health authorities emphasize that immunization is recommended based on an individual's vaccination history and Ministry of Health criteria. For those aged 85 or older, the protocol varies: individuals with no prior pneumococcal vaccination may receive a single dose, while those with previous doses of Pneumo 13 or 15 may require a dose of Pneumo 20 after a specific interval.

Residents are advised to visit their local Basic Health Units (UBS) with their vaccination cards so that medical teams can perform an individual assessment and determine eligibility.
