PNL enters opposition following criticism of PSD alliance
Robert Sighiartău, a PNL deputy from Bistrița-Năsăud, has announced that the National Liberal Party (PNL) is entering the opposition. Sighiartău criticized the 2021 alliance between the PNL and the Social Democratic Party (PSD), describing it as a mistake that eroded the party's political identity and damaged voter trust.
He claimed that while the PSD benefited from the advantages of power, the PNL bore the political costs of unpopular decisions required to stabilize national finances, particularly during Ilie Bolojan's tenure as Prime Minister. Sighiartău attributed the fall of the Bolojan government to the PSD, suggesting it was an attempt to keep the PNL in a subordinate position.
Despite the political cost, Sighiartău stated that moving into opposition provides the PNL with an opportunity to rebuild its identity and forge its own path before 2028. He emphasized the need to bring in new people and offer distinct solutions for Romania rather than simply opposing the PSD.
