PNL rejects AEP political party reform proposal

The National Liberal Party (PNL) has announced its opposition to a proposed amendment to the Political Parties Law submitted by the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP). PNL argues that the reform, initiated by an institution led by a PSD representative, could reflect the electoral interests of the PSD.

PNL is calling for the reform to be handled through a parliamentary initiative involving a special commission with representation from all parliamentary parties. The party is proposing its own project aimed at depoliticizing the AEP leadership by creating a supervisory council composed of representatives from all parliamentary parties to strengthen the institution's subordination to Parliament.

The AEP has rejected these political accusations, asserting that it is an autonomous, independent, and apolitical institution. The authority maintains that its legislative revision process, which includes projects on political advertising transparency and the organization of the AEP itself, has been conducted through debates with political parties, civil society, and academia to ensure a coherent and resilient electoral system.
