PNL sets conditions for supporting a technocratic government in Romania

Romania’s National Liberal Party (PNL) has expressed willingness to support a technocratic government, provided specific conditions are met. Acting Prime Minister and PNL President Ilie Bolojan stated that the incoming administration must possess transparent parliamentary majority support for a defined period and adhere to a strict ruling agenda focused on controlling state spending and reducing the budget deficit.

Key requirements include maintaining the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) commitments negotiated with the European Commission without parliamentary modification. Additionally, the PNL seeks a government composed of non-partisan figures, including ministers and prefects, to distance the administration from the Social Democratic Party (PSD).

The political deadlock follows the dismissal of the previous government on May 5. While the PNL pushes for a technocratic solution, PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu is reportedly working to form a ruling majority, potentially involving the UDMR and other parliamentary groups, which he expects to announce after August 15.
