PNM members urge government to reconsider Diwali Nagar funding

Senators Faris Al-Rawi and Foster Cummings of the People’s National Movement (PNM) are calling on the government to rethink its decision to withdraw support for this year’s Diwali Nagar.

Marvin Gonzales, chairman of the event, has questioned the sudden loss of state sponsorship, warning that the move could be perceived as political retaliation against cultural institutions. Senator Al-Rawi noted that the timing of the withdrawal from multiple state entities—occurring just one week before the celebrations—is particularly concerning.

While acknowledging the need for governments to manage public expenditures, Al-Rawi emphasized that organizers should receive adequate notice regarding changes in financial support. He highlighted the traditional role of the State in funding religious and cultural activities, often through the Office of the Prime Minister.
