PNV demands mitigation plan for Bilbao South Railway Bypass

The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) has submitted a non-legislative proposal to the Congress of Deputies to accelerate the development of the Bilbao South Railway Bypass (Variante Sur Ferroviaria). The group aims to strengthen the Basque Y as a freight corridor while demanding specific measures to mitigate the impact of increased rail traffic on several municipalities in Bizkaia and Álava.

Populations such as Arrigorriaga, Ugao-Miraballes, Arrankudiaga-Zollo, Laudio, Aiara, Amurrio, and Orduña could see freight train traffic nearly triple if the Ministry of Transport's current itinerary is implemented. The PNV is calling for a specific mitigation and railway integration plan, developed in collaboration with Adif, the Basque Government, and affected local councils. Proposed measures include noise and vibration protection, improvements to urban permeability, and the creation of a technical coordination committee to oversee the project.
