Po Delta implements climate adaptation measures

The Po Delta is facing significant environmental challenges due to climate change, including land subsidence of up to two meters in certain areas and saltwater intrusion that renders water unusable for agriculture. These issues are exacerbated by low river flow rates, which have remained below critical thresholds for sixty-eight days.

As part of the LIFE CLIMAX PO project, an initiative by the Po River District Basin Authority and Legambiente, adaptation measures are being implemented and planned. Current infrastructure includes the Volta Vaccari basin, which can hold one million cubic meters of freshwater. Future projects include the construction of a fixed anti-salt barrier at the mouth of the Po in Pila to protect the ecosystem, agriculture, and fishing industries.
