Pío López Obrador files amparo against Mexico's FGR

Pío López Obrador, brother of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has filed an amparo (a type of constitutional protection lawsuit) against the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR). The legal action seeks to compel the FGR to provide a definitive decision on whether it will pursue criminal action regarding an investigation opened in 2023 (case file FED/DGCAP-CDMX/0000027/2023).

The lawsuit, filed in a Mexico City federal criminal court, alleges delays by the Federal Public Ministry in determining the course of the investigation. While the specific details and origins of the 2023 investigation remain undisclosed in the judicial files, the matter follows previous legal scrutiny involving Pío López Obrador. In 2022, the FGR decided not to pursue criminal action against him regarding alleged electoral crimes stemming from 2020 videos that showed him receiving cash from David León Romero in 2015.

Judge Gabriela Sandoval Saavedra has been assigned to the case. Recent judicial records indicate that the petitioner has been notified electronically, though it is not yet clear if the lawsuit has been formally admitted or if any precautionary measures have been granted.
