Pío López Obrador seeks Morena position in Chiapas

Pío López Obrador, brother of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has officially registered with the Morena party to seek a position in Chiapas. He is running for the coordination of the Committees for the Defense of Transformation and National Sovereignty in District 9, based in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, which serves as a preliminary step toward a potential federal deputy candidacy for the 2027 elections.

López Obrador stated that his decision stems from a “moral commitment” and noted that he has lived in Chiapas for 60 years. He confirmed he will abide by the party’s internal survey mechanism to determine candidates. His political aspirations come amid previous controversy regarding videos from 2020 showing him receiving cash from official David León Romero.

Simultaneously, López Obrador has filed an indirect amparo (legal injunction) against the Attorney General's Office of Mexico City (FGJCDMX). The legal action claims a delay in a criminal investigation in which he is listed as a victim. A judge has scheduled a constitutional hearing for November 10, 2026, to address the alleged inaction of the prosecutor's office.
