Poá man arrested for stealing remains from wrong grave
A 54-year-old man was arrested in Poá, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, after violating a grave and taking human remains to his home. The incident came to light when the man's roommate discovered the remains in a plastic bag on the sidewalk of their residence and alerted the Military Police.
The suspect claimed he was motivated by recurring dreams in which his deceased mother appeared to be in constant suffering. He stated he went to the municipal cemetery to retrieve her remains, but investigations revealed he had mistakenly violated the grave of a different individual.
The Public Security Secretariat (SSP) confirmed the occurrence was registered as grave violation and theft of a corpse or part of one. The remains have been sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) for identification. Due to the circumstances, authorities have requested a mental health evaluation to assess the suspect's psychological state at the time of the incident.
