Po River community launches WaterBlitz monitoring initiative
The WaterBlitz di Po Grande initiative is taking place from October 16 to 19, 2026, to monitor the health of the Po River and its tributaries. This citizen science project involves citizens, families, schools, and associations in the collective effort to protect the fluvial ecosystem within the UNESCO MAB Po Grande Biosphere Reserve.
Promoted by the Po River District Basin Authority (ADBPO) in scientific collaboration with the University of Siena, the initiative is part of Earthwatch Europe’s global FreshWater Watch project. Participants use analysis kits to perform rapid 15-minute tests on water samples, specifically measuring nitrate and phosphate levels.
The collected data will be used to support the planning, protection, and management of surface and groundwater bodies in accordance with the Water Framework Directive. Following the collection phase, the University of Siena will process the data and present the findings to the public during a dedicated meeting.
