Po River water levels rise but water crisis persists in Italy
The Po River has experienced a recent rise in water levels following recent rainfall, increasing by 1.82 meters in a 24-hour period. At the Cremona hydrometer, levels rose from 5.38 meters below the zero mark to 3.56 meters below the zero mark. Between October 20 and October 23, the river saw a total increase of 3.5 meters.
Despite this recent rise, experts warn that the effects of the extreme summer drought have not been overcome. The Po District Basin Authority notes that water flows remain significantly below historical averages for this period. Specifically, flows are 58% below average in Cremona, 66% in Piacenza, and 68% at the Po Delta. At Pontelagoscuro, the flow was recorded at 627 cubic meters per second, compared to a historical average of 1,967 cubic meters per second. Groundwater levels in Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna also remain in a state of difficulty.
