Poasi residents warn security agencies over chieftaincy dispute

Residents of Poasi in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly have expressed strong opposition to further attempts to install a new chief. In a demonstration of protest, community members wore red clothing to symbolize their anger following an incident on September 13, 2026.

The Poasi Oman Committee reported that a group associated with the Poasi Akwamu Royal Stool family attempted to forcefully install a chief at the Poasi Palace using armed men. This event reportedly caused fear and confusion among residents, including children and the elderly. Calm was eventually restored through the intervention of the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, and the Police Command.

During a media conference titled “A Call to Action – Enough is Enough,” Poasi Oman Committee Secretary Samuel Kwabena Emmisah urged the military, police, and other security agencies to refrain from interfering in the community’s traditional affairs. He requested that security personnel not be used to facilitate the installation of any chief who has not been accepted or endorsed by the community.
