Płock Zoo announces rare birth of endemic Saba anole lizards

The Płock Zoo in Poland has announced the unexpected birth of Saba anoles (Anolis sabanus), a rare species of lizard endemic to the volcanic island of Saba in the Caribbean. The newborn lizards currently measure approximately 3 cm in length.

The four adult anoles arrived at the Płock Zoo in May from the Wrocław Zoo, where they had hatched nearly two years prior. Bogdan Koczyk, head of the aquarium and herpetarium section at the Płock Zoo, noted that the rapid breeding was a surprise, as the facility had originally planned to introduce individuals from a different group to bolster the breeding population first.

Staff stated that the successful hatching indicates the animals have acclimatized well to their new environment. Because the species is endemic to a single location in the wild, the zoo emphasized that every new individual is highly valuable for conservation efforts.
