Podcasts and radio coexist through competition and complementarity
Dr. Duygu Temel Kayar, a faculty member at Üsküdar University’s Faculty of Communication, has analyzed the evolving relationship between radio and podcasting. According to Kayar, the two mediums exist in a state of both competition and complementarity rather than simple replacement.
While radio excels in live broadcasting and real-time content delivery, podcasts offer listeners greater control over when and how they consume content. This flexibility allows podcasts to become a natural part of daily routines, such as during commutes or exercise. Furthermore, podcasts provide a platform for niche topics that may not find sufficient space in traditional radio programming, helping to build dedicated listener communities.
Kayar also noted that podcasting offers creators more flexibility regarding broadcast duration, subject matter, and narrative style. Instead of acting as a threat to traditional radio, podcasting is viewed as an expansion of the audio broadcasting landscape, fostering more personal and sincere connections with audiences.
