Canary Islands left-wing parties form Unidad del Pueblo Canario coalition

Four progressive political forces in the Canary Islands—Nueva Canarias, Podemos, Izquierda Unida, and Movimiento Sumar—have reached an agreement to run together in the general elections on November 29. The coalition will compete under the name ‘Unidad del Pueblo Canario’ (UPC).

This alliance marks a significant development as it represents the first time Podemos and Sumar will appear on the same ballot at a national level. The coalition’s platform focuses on defending regional interests, housing rights, and the strengthening of public services such as health and education. In Las Palmas, the candidacy for Congress will be led by Luis Campos, while in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the list will be distributed among Sumar, Izquierda Unida, and Podemos.

Separately, the PSOE has finalized its own lists for the Canary Islands. For the Congress of Deputies, the delegation will be led by Secretary General Ángel Víctor Torres, with José Antonio Valbuena and Dolores Corujo heading the lists for Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas, respectively. For the Senate, the PSOE has proposed Paloma Hernández Cerezo as the candidate for Fuerteventura.
