Podemos leader calls for total international isolation of Israel
Ione Belarra, leader of the Spanish opposition party Podemos, has called for the total international isolation of Israel, arguing that recent trade restrictions are insufficient. This follows a joint decision by twelve nations—including Spain, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, and the United Kingdom—to implement trade limitations on products originating from illegal Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories.
Belarra stated that these measures are “half-hearted steps” and fail to exert real pressure on Israel. She is urging the international community to go further by severing all military and commercial ties and expelling Israel from all international organizations. While the UN Human Rights Office welcomed the trade restrictions as a concrete step against illegal settlements and violence in the West Bank, Belarra maintains that the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip continues unabated.
