Podemos rejects Junts proposal to delegate immigration powers to Catalonia

Podemos has rejected a new legislative proposal registered by Junts in the Spanish Congress that seeks to delegate immigration competencies to the Generalitat de Catalunya. Ione Belarra, the general secretary of Podemos, stated that the party's opposition is not merely due to the preamble of the law, which Junts has modified to attempt to bypass the party's veto, but also due to the core intention and the specific articles of the text.

Belarra criticized the proposal for maintaining a security-focused approach to migration management and for the existence of foreign internments centers (CIE), which she described as ‘racist prisons’. She argued that the delegation would lead to an ‘uncontrolled increase’ in state security forces in Catalonia. The party maintains it would only negotiate a delegation of powers that is ‘based on human rights’ and requires a profound reformulation of the current text to move away from a purely securitarian focus.
