Podgorica announces public tender for Independence Square redesign

The city of Podgorica has issued a public call for the conceptual design of a new layout for Independence Square. The goal is to transform the central urban square into a more modern, greener, more accessible, and functional space.

The scope of the competition includes the area bounded by Vučedolska Street to the south, Bokeška Street to the north, the National Library ‘Radosav Ljumović’ and the City Assembly to the west, and the Beko building to the east. The reconstruction is also expected to address surrounding streets that impact pedestrian flow, terrain leveling, accessibility, and drainage.

Mayor Saša Mujović stated that the project aims to rectify flaws in the existing 2006 design, noting that the current space suffers from uneven terrain, a central fountain that acts as a barrier, a lack of shade, and inadequate technical infrastructure. The project follows a participatory process that included a public survey with over 1,500 citizens.
