Podgorica Assembly Candidate Srđan Perić Faces Opposition Over Presidency Vote

Srđan Perić, leader of the opposition party Preokret, has been nominated for president of the City Assembly of Podgorica. His party submitted his candidacy with signatures from 20 opposition deputies, arguing that his election would enable a “technical government” and prevent the imposition of a forced administration.

The Assembly remains deadlocked, with 27 governing deputies, 28 opposition deputies and four DNP members who withdrew from the coalition. The resignation of Speaker Jelena Borovinić Bojović adds to the uncertainty, and a vote on Perić’s candidacy is scheduled for today.

Pokret za Podgoricu announced it will not support Perić, stating that his candidacy is currently backed by opposition parties. The movement warned that supporting him could legitimize a forced administration and destabilise the city’s governance, and called for a candidate from the governing coalition instead. Perić responded that he stands behind his decisions, saying, “I always stand behind my decisions with my name and surname.”
