Podgorica hosts scientific meeting on the Battle of Fundina

An international scientific meeting titled ‘The Battle of Fundina (1876) and its Legacy: Balkan Challenges and the International Influence of the Great Eastern Crisis’ was held at Kuslevo House in Podgorica. Organized by the Museums and Galleries of Podgorica and the Historical Institute of the University of Montenegro, the event gathered historians and researchers from Montenegro and the surrounding region.

The symposium focused on analyzing the Battle of Fundina within its broader political, military, and diplomatic context during the Great Eastern Crisis. Participants examined the battle's significance in Montenegrin history, its place in historical memory, and its cultural heritage.

Boris Spalević, Deputy Mayor of Podgorica, addressed the attendees, noting that the August 1876 event was not merely a local armed conflict but an occurrence that shook the European map. He attributed the victory of the Montenegrin army to superior military strategy, knowledge of the terrain, and the discipline of the Montenegrin and Kuči battalions.
