Podgorica library renaming triggers political controversy

The Council of the National Library "Radosav Ljumović" in Podgorica voted to change the institution’s name to "Marko Miljanov". Three council members approved the amendment, one abstained and a staff representative was absent. The decision has not taken effect because the City Assembly, the legal founder of the library, must still give its approval.

The proposal sparked widespread criticism on social media, with users accusing the council members of revising cultural heritage and engaging in politicised renaming. Local politicians also voiced concern, noting the lack of public consultation and the possibility of illegal procurement practices.

The Party of European Progress (SEP) in the City Assembly announced it will file a formal initiative to dismiss the current council members, alleging that the name change violated legal procedures, transparency standards, and the preservation of anti‑fascist history. SEP calls for the board’s removal to restore proper governance of the library.
