Podgorica urged to name street after Admiral Vladimir Barović
Non-governmental organizations Center for Civic Education (CGO) and Human Rights Action (HRA) are calling on Podgorica authorities to name a street after Admiral Vladimir Barović. The initiative marks 35 years since Barović, an admiral of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), took his own life on September 29, 1991, to avoid following orders to shell coastal cities in Croatia from the island of Vis.
In his farewell letter, Barović stated he was doing so “because Montenegrins cannot destroy a people who have done them no wrong.” Following his death, the order to shell the cities was rescinded. While Barović has received international recognition, including a memorial plaque on Vis and honorary citizenship of Pula, no monument bearing his name currently exists in Montenegro.
The organizations noted that the initiative has met the necessary procedural requirements and are awaiting a decision from the Capital City's Council for Street Naming. They highlighted that Cetinje recently honored another figure, Krsta Đurović, who similarly opposed the JNA attacks on Dubrovnik.
