Podgorica's Vuk Karadžić School Flood Delays New School Year

Heavy rain in mid‑July caused flood damage to three pavilions of the Vuk Karadžić primary school in Podgorica, Montenegro. The first pavilion suffered the most severe damage, with destroyed sanitary facilities, raised parquet flooring and water‑logged interiors.

School officials and the parents' council, led by Olga Jovanović, said the construction work was halted for a month and that a negotiated procurement process will replace the public tender to speed up repairs. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Works have been notified. Director Marija Lazarević said the school is coordinating with authorities to restore the premises and hopes the new school year can start on schedule, though a short delay or a brief extension of the summer break is possible. Parents expressed concern about potential online classes or relocation of the roughly 1,150 students.

Repairs to the interior are expected to begin as soon as possible, with the aim of completing the work before the September 1 start date.
