Podiatrists recommend adjustable sandals over flip-flops for foot health

Podiatrists are warning against the use of flip-flops for extended walking, particularly in urban environments. Because flip-flops lack rear support and cushioning, the toes must constantly contract to hold the sole in place, leading to muscle tension and fatigue. The Union Française pour la Santé du Pied recommends footwear that provides stability, shock absorption, and proper heel support.

During hot weather, heat can cause vasodilation, leading to swelling or edema in the feet and ankles. This is especially common in older adults or those with venous insufficiency. To manage this, experts suggest wearing sandals with adjustable straps, such as Velcro, which can be loosened as the feet expand throughout the day.

Ideal summer footwear should feature at least one strap at the front and a strap around the ankle to secure the heel. A thick, flexible sole with a moderate heel of approximately 2 to 3 centimeters is recommended to provide cushioning and stability. Experts advise trying on new shoes in the late afternoon when feet are at their largest to ensure a proper fit.
