Podor agricultural potential evaluated by Senegal's Ministry of Agriculture

In Senegal, the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock, Dr. Cheikhou Oumar Ba, conducted a monitoring tour of the 2026 agricultural campaign in the Podor department. The visit focused on evaluating infrastructure and meeting with producers in the Senegal River Valley to identify constraints to agricultural exploitation.

The Podor department possesses significant hydro-agricultural potential, with approximately 140,000 hectares of irrigable land. The region utilizes the Senegal River and its tributaries, such as the Doué, Ngallenka, and Gayo, to support irrigated rice cultivation and market gardening.

In the commune of Gamadji, efforts are underway at the Village Irrigated Perimeter (PIV) to improve production conditions through the rehabilitation and extension of hydro-agricultural developments, increased mechanization, and enhanced irrigation maintenance. The Gamadji Union, comprising 782 members across four groups, currently manages 70 hectares, with 58 hectares under cultivation.
