Podor river museum preserves history of fluvial commerce

The Écomusée du Fleuve in Podor, Senegal, was established to preserve the historical memory of the city's river-based commerce and quay activities. Following a decline in river traffic in the early 2000s, the local economy and the traditional businesses that relied on boat arrivals and departures significantly diminished.

The museum project was inspired by the family history of Mawdo Diop and his son, Ousmane Diop. After their family shop, which had been a central part of the quay's commercial life for decades, closed in 2006, Ousmane Diop envisioned transforming the empty premises into a museum rather than letting the history fade.

Opened in 2018, the museum houses a collection of items that reflect the region's economic past, including gum arabic, scales, old lamps, and various household tools, serving to safeguard the collective memory of Podor's role as a commercial hub.
