Pods4Rail project develops automated modular mobility concept

The EU-funded project Pods4Rail, involving 15 research and industrial partners, has developed an automated mobility concept designed to link road, rail, and cable car transport seamlessly. The system utilizes a modular approach termed ‘supermodality,’ where standardized capsules containing passengers or goods remain intact while being transferred between different mobile carrier units.

These carrier units provide the necessary chassis, propulsion, and energy supply for each specific mode of transport. For example, a capsule could begin on a road-based carrier and automatically transition to a rail-based carrier at a transport hub. The rail system serves as the high-capacity, energy-efficient backbone of the concept. The project also explored the integration of cable cars to complement urban public transport.

Research conducted by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and its partners focused on technical implementation, including lightweight vehicle structures, automated locking and transfer systems, energy requirements, and communication between vehicles and infrastructure. The project aims to provide door-to-door transport solutions for both commuters and logistics companies.
