Pods4Rail project develops autonomous multi-modal transport capsules

The EU-funded Pods4Rail project aims to revolutionize European transport by integrating road, rail, and cable car systems through autonomous transport capsules. The initiative seeks to eliminate the need for passengers to transfer between different modes of transport during a single journey.

Led by Siemens Mobility and featuring vehicle concepts developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the project involves 15 partners from six countries and has received nearly three million euros in EU funding. The modular system works by placing passengers or goods into a capsule that is automatically transferred between different vehicles—such as from a road vehicle to a train and eventually to a cable car—at specific nodes, allowing for seamless travel from rural areas to mountain destinations.
