POE-DOU union condemns Greek tax law as covert amnesty
The Panhellenic Federation of Employees in Public Financial Services (POE-DOU) has issued a formal memorandum condemning Article 28 of Law 5104/2024. The union claims this legislation acts as a covert amnesty for major tax evaders by undermining decades of established fiscal oversight regulations.
According to the union, the provision—enacted during Kostis Hatzidakis's tenure as Minister of National Economy and Finance—effectively prevents tax inspectors from pursuing significant outstanding cases. The memorandum alleges that the law imposes restrictive deadlines that lead to the cancellation of high-interest fiscal cases, resulting in the loss of millions of euros in annual public revenue.
POE-DOU argues that while the government publicly promotes digital tax enforcement, this specific legislative mechanism weakens the ability to audit large-scale financial misconduct, depriving the state of resources intended for education, healthcare, and social protection.
