POEDHN demands better protection for Greek healthcare workers amid rising violence

The Federation of Public Health Employees (POEDHN) has expressed deep concern regarding increasing incidents of violence against healthcare workers in Greece. The federation cited serious incidents occurring at various locations, including the Red Cross, Agia Sophia, Pammakaristos, EKAB, Volos, and Argolida.

POEDHN is calling for the strict application of Law 5090/2024, specifically Article 33, which classifies the disruption of nursing institution operations as a criminal offense punishable by at least two years of imprisonment and a fine. The federation criticized police authorities for requiring victims to file formal complaints, noting that workers often fear being targeted if they do so.

Additionally, the federation highlighted insufficient security measures within hospitals. They noted that private security personnel often claim they lack the authority to engage in physical contact with agitators, leaving staff unprotected. Consequently, POEDHN is demanding the hiring of dedicated security personnel to ensure the safety of healthcare workers.
