Poet José Mármol discusses literary evolution and the Generation of the 80s

Poet José Mármol, a founding figure of the Generation of the 80s, discusses his literary philosophy and the evolution of poetic discourse. Mármol, who also serves as Vice President of Banco Popular, emphasizes that for every line written, there must be a thousand read.

Reflecting on the Generation of the 80s, Mármol describes it as a group of individuals rather than a strictly cohesive movement. He notes that his work sought to move away from the exhausted aesthetics of the 1960s and post-war generations, which he characterized as ideologically loaded and colloquial. Instead, he championed what he termed the ‘poetics of thinking,’ where the writer’s fundamental commitment is to language and thought rather than external ideological precepts.
