Poet Zoe Dickinson Highlights Pacific Coast in New Collection
Vancouver Island poet Zoe Dickinson was invited to the Denman Island Readers and Writers Festival, a Canadian literary event that has been held for almost 20 years. At the festival she presented her bioregional poetry, a style that blends ecological philosophy with local landscape.
Dickinson’s latest book, Staff Picks for Invertebrates, features poems that celebrate Pacific Ocean life, including pieces about a nudibranch sea slug and a lichen. She explained, “I’ve always been curious, and poetry is a way of being curious about the world,” adding that understanding the ecosystem is essential to her work. In addition to writing, Dickinson manages Victoria’s antiquarian bookstore, Russell Books, which she describes as part of the same ecosystem.
The collection and her readings aim to encourage readers to see their coastal home anew and to consider the interconnectedness of humans and nature.
