Albanian Ministry of Health investigates death of pregnant woman

The Albanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has launched an independent investigation following the death of Marjana Karolina Bunaj, a 37-year-old pregnant woman. Ms. Bunaj passed away while being transported from Pogradec to Tirana for specialized medical assistance.

Family members have raised serious concerns regarding the management of the case at the Pogradec maternity hospital. According to the victim's sister, Albina Mekolli, there were significant delays in medical intervention and transport. The family claims that although a helicopter transfer was discussed, it was not utilized because it was night. The patient was eventually moved by ambulance after 4:00 AM, several hours after initially presenting with severe abdominal pain and internal bleeding.

The Ministry has stated it will conduct a full, impartial assessment of the entire healthcare process, from the patient's initial presentation to the conclusion of her treatment. Officials emphasized that if any irregularities, omissions, or violations of professional standards are identified, appropriate legal measures will be taken to ensure accountability.
