Pohang City Council addresses Yeongilman-daero traffic congestion

During an administrative audit by the Pohang City Council, officials addressed severe traffic congestion on Yeongilman-daero, a key bypass road in Pohang. Despite the opening of Haeoreum Bridge, vehicle volume has reached capacity due to connections with the Yeongdeok and Daegu-Pohang Expressways and new residential developments in Pentacity and the Inji district.

To alleviate bottlenecking, council members proposed the construction of the ‘Jamyeong Interchange’ to connect National Route 28 directly with Yeongilman-daero. While the Busan Regional Office of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has expressed hesitation due to distance regulations between interchanges, Pohang City stated it will pursue active negotiations to implement the project.

Additional measures include installing more real-time traffic information electronic displays to assist driver route selection. For long-term solutions, the city is considering the introduction of new transportation methods, such as ground-based trams, to diversify the public transit system and reduce road density.
