Pohang launches probe and safety inspections after Boritdol bridge collapse
On July 28, a section of the Boritdol pedestrian bridge in Pohang, South Korea, collapsed, breaking a mid‑span pier and part of the deck. No fatalities occurred; 17 tourists and anglers were stranded on the nearby rocks and were rescued by coast‑guard and fire‑department teams.
The Korean Coast Guard and Pohang city authorities have begun a joint investigation, coordinating with the National Forensic Service to examine design, construction, maintenance and supervision of the bridge. The bridge, completed in 2013 at a cost of roughly 115 billion won, had undergone safety inspections in 2020 (graded B) and 2024 (graded C), with remedial work carried out after the latter.
In response, the city has formed a dedicated inspection team to carry out urgent safety checks of other coastal structures, including waterfront pavilions, observation decks and sky‑walks. Earlier, three months before the collapse, residents reported hearing loud knocking sounds from the bridge, but no restriction or detailed safety assessment was imposed.
