Pohang safety measures strengthened near Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant

The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission has mediated a resolution to strengthen safety infrastructure for residents living within the radiation emergency planning zone of the Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant in Pohang.

Following a collective grievance filed by residents of 19 villages, the commission's adjustment plan includes replacing disaster response supplies and installing or maintaining smart village broadcasting systems. To ensure rapid evacuation during a radiation emergency, authorities will also consult on road construction and management plans to reinforce emergency evacuation routes by December.

Additionally, the plan addresses budget management concerns. Previously, Pohang City allocated 80% of the nuclear power regional resource facility tax to its general account, making it difficult to track specific expenditures. Under the new adjustment, the entire amount of these funds will be allocated to a special account to ensure transparent and dedicated use for resident protection and emergency preparedness.
