Pohang to build earthquake safety center at former geothermal site
South Korean authorities have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the Pohang Earthquake Safety Comprehensive Center at the former geothermal power plant site that triggered the 2017 Pohang earthquake. The project, funded entirely by national budget totaling 22 billion won, aims to resolve previous administrative delays caused by the lack of a designated operating body.
Under the agreement, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment will oversee construction, while the Korea Meteorological Administration will manage operations upon completion. Gyeongsangbuk-do and Pohang City will provide administrative support. The center is scheduled to begin construction later this year and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2028.
The facility will serve as a hub for earthquake observation, data analysis, and research into faults and seismic activity. Additionally, it will include safety education and experience facilities to teach citizens disaster response protocols and earthquake preparedness.
