Pohorje forest visitors warned of bear and wolf presence

The Slovenia Forest Service (ZGS) has issued a warning to foragers and visitors in the Pohorje region regarding the presence of bears and wolves. While these animals typically avoid human contact, the ZGS advises caution to prevent accidental encounters.

According to Igor Kopše, head of the Maribor regional unit of the ZGS, an estimated 11 to 14 wolves have established themselves in the Pohorje area. Bears, primarily younger individuals seeking space due to population pressure in other regions, have also been recorded by hunting cameras near Ribniško Pohorje and Klopni vrh.

To minimize conflict, the ZGS recommends that visitors make noise by whistling or tapping a stick on stones, especially in dense vegetation. In the event of an encounter, people are advised to remain calm, speak in a quiet voice, and retreat slowly the way they came. Specifically regarding bears, experts warn against running or climbing trees, as bears are proficient climbers and runners. Additionally, dog owners are reminded to keep pets on leashes, as unleashed dogs are a primary factor in bear attacks.
